Day 12: Azofra to Grañon (21km)

I don't have any photos from the actual walk today because my phone was dead. The one downside to the muni albergue was no electrical outlets in the rooms.

Instead, it was another awful day of walking- the morning was miserable and freezing cold with no stops for the first 15km.

There was a town, Cirueña, at the 10km mark, but it was an awful ghost town: there's a big golf course as you enter, then block after block of apartments where each one would have a "Se Vende" sign up, staying it was for sale. Every now and then there would be one occupied apartment. I can't imagine how creepy it would be living in those solitary apartments surrounded by no one.

We essentially spent the day trying to defeat the cold wind which just sliced through our clothes. That and the terrible mud that weighed us down.

The final 6km to Grañon poured, which was lots of fun. We were very glad when we finally arrived, only to have the one albergue we saw be closed! We eventually found a Casa Rural which was open. It was expensive, but we were beyond caring at that point.

We eventually ran into John and Chris who were staying at a paroquial albergue at the top of the church. They were sleeping on gym mats, but the whole set up made us very jealous of their lodgings, with a communal dinner and breakfast that everyone had to help make. It just sounded so lovely, and the church alcove they were staying in just seemed so lovely and homely.

Of course, no visit to any Spanish town would be complete without a visit to the church itself. Luckily I charged the phone up for this!

This guy on the altar is obviously his friend's wingman.

And a modern day pilgrim in the stain glass window.

Chris ended up being taken to a hospital overnight because of how bad his leg was- they thought it might be thrombosis. This was not good news, obviously, but especially because Chris was so gung-ho about his Camino.
